New Delhi: As winter chills grip the nation, nutrition experts are urging people to embrace dates (khajur) as the ultimate seasonal superfood that naturally warms the body, fights fatigue and supercharges immunity.
Speaking exclusively, Fareeha Shanam, Senior Dietician at Sir Gangaram Hospital, Delhi, explains why dates are a winter must-have: “Their inherent warm taseer generates heat from within, while the high natural sugar content – glucose, fructose and sucrose – delivers instant energy when cold weather drains you faster.”
Packed with iron, potassium, magnesium, fibre, protein and vitamin B6, dates also strengthen immunity and ease digestion woes common in the season.
But how many should you eat? “A healthy adult can safely enjoy 2-3 dates daily,” says Fareeha. Diabetics, however, should limit it to just one and only after consulting their doctor, as dates can spike blood sugar.
When is the best time to consume dates? The best time to consume dates is first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. For maximum benefit, soak them overnight or pair them with other dry fruits. Feeling indulgent? Soak in milk for an extra calcium boost.
“Whether dry or soaked, dates work wonders,” the expert adds, “but moderation is key – overdoing it, especially on an empty stomach, may raise sugar levels for some.”
This winter, let these humble palm fruits be your simplest route to staying warm, energetic and healthy.
