March 2025: Delhi Says No More Old Cars

New Delhi: Beginning March 31, 2025, the Delhi government has put a ban on old petrol vehicles over 15 years and old diesel vehicles over 10 years. The move comes in light of rising pollution levels in the national capital. The enforcement will include seizing vehicles of these categories and sending them for scrapping.

Delhi environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said on Saturday that petrol pumps in the national capital will not provide these vehicles with fuel from March 31. The enforcement of several stringent regulatory measures to curb auto emissions and pollution includes this decision. The move comes in the wake of a high-level discussion between the officials here about preventing air pollution in the city.

The discussion revolved around certain important policy proposals such as the restriction on older vehicles, compulsory anti-smog measures, and the move to electrified public transport. After the meetings, Minister Sirsa said, ”We are installing devices on the petrol pumps, which will identify vehicles more than 15 years old and prohibit them from getting petrol.” He added that the Delhi government would convey the matter to the Union Petroleum Ministry.

Besides curtailing fuel supply for older vehicles, Sirsa added that all high-rise buildings, hotels, and commercial complexes in Delhi will have to install anti-smog guns to bring down pollution levels. He also announced plans to replace nearly 90% of the city’s public CNG buses with electric buses by December 2025. With the announcement of this new initiative, it is in line with the government pledge to provide cleaner and more sustainable public transportation.
