Riyadh: The prolonged conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi rebels has taken a highly contentious new turn following allegations of an attempted drone strike on Mecca, the holiest city in Islam. While Saudi authorities claim to have intercepted a hostile drone in the city’s airspace, the Houthis have categorically dismissed the accusations as fabricated propaganda.
According to the Saudi-led military coalition, air defence systems successfully intercepted and destroyed a drone that had breached Mecca’s airspace. Following the incident, the Saudi Civil Defense issued an urgent alert, instructing residents to remain indoors, maintain calm, and adhere strictly to safety protocols. A coalition spokesperson condemned the alleged strike, stating that the “attempt to target Mecca with a drone will remain a black mark in the record of Houthi violations.”
However, the Houthi rebels have vehemently denied any involvement. In a major statement reacting to the international uproar, the Yemeni rebel group refuted the claims, asserting they did not direct any attack towards the holy city. Defending their stance, the rebels called the Saudi claims “false” and described the allegations as a “cliché” attempt to manipulate the religious sentiments of Muslims globally to garner geopolitical sympathy.
Despite the fierce denial, the international backlash was swift. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) issued a strong condemnation, labelling the alleged drone strike a “heinous crime.” The OIC stated that targeting the vicinity of Mecca and Medina is a deliberate attempt to terrorise innocent civilians, which grossly violates international law and deeply offends the religious values of Muslims worldwide.
This escalating war of words occurs against the backdrop of a rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Recent military escalations have reportedly claimed nearly 500 lives, and approximately 94,000 citizens have been forced to flee their homes. Maritime security in the strategic Bab-al-Mandeb strait and the Red Sea also remains under severe threat, heavily impacting international shipping routes.
This is not the first time Mecca’s security has been a flashpoint in the conflict. In 2017, Saudi forces claimed to have intercepted a ballistic missile fired by the Houthis toward the city, an allegation the rebels similarly denied. As the situation remains incredibly tense, geopolitical observers are closely monitoring whether this incident will trigger a broader military retaliation in the already volatile Middle East.
