Greater Noida: As Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait recently took charge of a massive farmers’ Mahapanchayat outside the Greater Noida Authority, announcing his plans to camp in tents, public curiosity surrounding his personal wealth has reignited. With his prominent role in agrarian agitations across the country, debates frequently surface on social media regarding the actual extent of his landholdings and financial assets.
For a leader fighting for the rights of the common agrarian community, the contrast presented by media reports about his property is striking. According to various reports, the Tikait family initially owned a modest 5 bighas of agricultural land in their ancestral village of Sisauli, Uttar Pradesh, during a time when their financial condition was fairly ordinary. However, claims suggest that over the years, this landholding has expanded significantly, with the family now reportedly possessing around 110 bighas in Sisauli alone.
While social media rumours often exaggerate these figures, claiming he owns thousands of bighas, there is no verified proof to substantiate such astronomical numbers. Nonetheless, multiple reports suggest that Tikait’s lifestyle and assets extend far beyond that of a traditional farmer. Allegations frequently point to his ownership of lucrative commercial properties, petrol pumps, and large showrooms. Some estimates peg his total net worth at a staggering Rs 80 crore or more, with business interests purportedly spread across 13 major cities in India.
Naturally, whenever a major farmers’ protest erupts, detractors take to social media to circulate these figures, questioning his authenticity as a representative of impoverished farmers.
Interestingly, when confronted by journalists regarding these multi-crore asset claims, Tikait rarely issues a flat denial. Instead, he often adopts a sarcastic tone, humorously remarking that the media has severely underestimated his wealth and should quote even higher figures. In a recent interaction, the farm leader quipped that he himself is unaware of his total worth, suggesting it could run into thousands of crores.
Taking a swipe at his critics and the government, Tikait stated that calculating his true assets would require the deployment of several patwaris (revenue officials), chartered accountants, and major central investigative agencies to finally separate the wheat from the chaff. Until then, the exact magnitude of his wealth remains a subject of intense speculation and political mudslinging.
