Srinagar: Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir achieved a major success in their fight against terrorism on Saturday, 14th September 2024. In a joint operation conducted by the Indian Army and local police, three terrorists were killed in the Baramulla district. The operation, which is still underway, was launched following intelligence inputs that revealed the presence of militants hiding in the Chak Tappar Kreeri area. The encounter, which began during the night of 13-14 September, continued into the early hours of Saturday, resulting in the elimination of the terrorists.
Officials confirmed that two to three militants were initially believed to be hiding in the region. Security forces have cordoned off the area and are continuing their search to neutralise any remaining threats.
The operation in Baramulla comes on the heels of a tragic incident in Kishtwar, where two Army personnel, including Junior Commissioned Officer Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar, were killed during a separate encounter on Friday. The gunfight occurred in the Pingnal Dugadda forest, leaving four soldiers injured. Sadly, two of them succumbed to their injuries later in hospital.
Over the past two months, hill districts in Jammu, including Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, and Reasi, have experienced an uptick in militant attacks on security forces and civilians. Terrorists have been employing guerrilla tactics, attacking and then retreating into the dense forests. Reports suggest that a group of 40 to 50 foreign militants is responsible for these attacks. In response, the Army has deployed over 4,000 specially trained troops, including commandos skilled in mountain warfare, to tackle the insurgents.
This latest wave of violence is particularly concerning as Jammu and Kashmir prepares for upcoming assembly elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is the BJP’s star campaigner, is set to visit the Union Territory (UT) on Saturday, where he will address a public rally in Doda, marking his first appearance there after the election announcement. PM Modi is also scheduled to visit Srinagar on 19th September.
The final phase of polling in Jammu and Kashmir will take place on 1st October, covering the districts of Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora.
