Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplements Fail To Prevent Cognitive Decline Reveals New Study

New Delhi: Millions of individuals globally consume fish oil supplements with the hope of boosting their memory and preventing cognitive decline. However, a major new clinical trial has revealed that high dose omega 3 supplements do not improve brain health or slow down changes associated with Alzheimer disease in older adults.

The extensive two year study, conducted by researchers at Keck Medicine of the University of Southern California and published in eBioMedicine, evaluated older individuals with an elevated risk of developing the debilitating neurodegenerative condition. Lead investigator Dr Hussein Naji Yassine stated that while everyone wishes for a magic pill to prevent cognitive decline, their findings clearly show that fish oil supplements do not protect brain health.

During the clinical trial, researchers recruited 365 adults between the ages of 55 and 80 who rarely consumed fish. Nearly half of these participants carried the APOE4 gene, which is considered the strongest genetic risk factor for late onset Alzheimer disease. The participants were randomly divided to receive either a daily supplement containing 2000 milligrams of DHA, a crucial omega 3 fatty acid, or a placebo.

The study presented a unique finding regarding how the body processes the supplement. Researchers confirmed that the omega 3 fatty acids successfully reached the brains of the participants, with a 17 percent increase in DHA levels observed in their cerebrospinal fluid after six months. Despite this direct nutrient delivery, the participants taking the supplements showed no significant improvements in memory or cognitive performance when compared to the placebo group.

Furthermore, detailed brain imaging scans revealed that the fish oil supplements failed to prevent the shrinkage of the hippocampus. This specific brain region is essential for memory retention and is commonly monitored as a key indicator of brain aging and Alzheimer risk.

Health experts now believe that relying solely on isolated supplements might not be the most effective strategy. Researchers suggest that omega 3 fatty acids could potentially offer better neuroprotective benefits when consumed as part of a comprehensive dietary plan, such as the Mediterranean diet. Medical professionals continue to emphasize that a holistic approach encompassing a balanced diet, regular physical exercise, and quality sleep remains the best defense against long term cognitive decline.
