New Delhi: Imagine spotting blood in your urine – a sight that sends shivers down the spine. While it might seem like a minor glitch, experts warn it could be your body’s red flag for something far graver, like kidney cancer. Hematuria, as it’s medically known, isn’t always cause for panic, but ignoring it could spell trouble.
Common triggers include urinary tract infections, kidney stones, side effects from medications, or even prostate problems in men. However, when paired with persistent symptoms, it demands urgent scrutiny. Dr Deepak Kumar Suman, a senior resident at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, stresses the risks of complacency. “People often take urine-related problems lightly… Urine with a bad smell, burning sensation during urination – these symptoms are ignored. But blood in urine is a signal that should never be ignored,” he told.
Watch out for red alerts like recurring blood, pain while urinating, unexplained weight loss, or nagging one-sided lower back pain. Alone, hematuria isn’t conclusive proof of cancer, but combined with these, it could indicate early-stage kidney malignancy.
Diagnosis starts simple: a urine test or ultrasound. If symptoms linger, a cystoscopy might follow. Dr Suman advises: “If blood in urine persists for more than a day or two, consult a doctor without delay. If it’s just one day, there might be no major issue, but beyond that, immediate advice is essential.” Early detection, he adds, can catch cancer in its nascent phase, boosting treatment success.
Prevention is straightforward – guzzle at least seven glasses of water daily, don’t hold back urine, and tackle infection signs promptly. Stay vigilant; your health hangs in the balance.
