Leeds: Delivering a ruthless performance with the red ball, a dominant England crushed Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs inside three days to win the first Test of the three-match series at Headingley, Leeds. With this resounding victory on Friday, the hosts have taken a 1-0 lead in the series, extending Pakistan’s agonizing 39-year wait for a Test win at the venue since their last triumph in 1987.
The foundation of England’s monumental win was laid by a stellar bowling attack spearheaded by pacers Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue. The duo had already made history on the opening day by picking up five wickets each to bundle Pakistan out for a paltry 171.
In reply, England’s batters capitalized on the momentum, piling up a formidable 409 all out in their first innings. The last two English pairs added a crucial 43 runs on the morning of the third day, ensuring a massive first-innings lead of 238 runs.
Faced with a mountainous deficit, Pakistan’s second innings collapsed in spectacular fashion, mirroring their earlier batting woes. The demolition began with fiery speedster Jofra Archer, who dismantled the Pakistani openers within the first four overs. Following Archer’s initial burst, the heroes of the first innings, Robinson and Tongue, returned to wreak havoc on the middle and lower order.
Both Robinson and Tongue claimed three wickets apiece in the second innings, finishing the match with exceptional figures of eight wickets each. Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan offered a lone, brief resistance with a fighting 41 before falling as the ninth wicket. The visitors were eventually bowled out for a dismal 135 well before the end of the second session on Day 3.
The match also held special significance for Joe Root, who marked a triumphant return as England’s Test captain after a four-year hiatus. Securing a massive innings victory on his home ground at Headingley made the occasion even sweeter for the seasoned batter, especially considering the venue is not scheduled to host another Test match until 2029.
With Pakistan’s batting lineup thoroughly exposed against the swinging and seaming ball, they will need a dramatic turnaround in the second Test to keep their series hopes alive.
