New Delhi: Imagine a stealthy intruder that strikes silently, often dismissed as everyday woes until it’s too late. That’s prostate cancer, a lurking menace affecting millions of men worldwide, especially those over 50.

However, the good news is that early detection and simple lifestyle changes can significantly improve the situation.

Drawing from expert insights, we uncover why this common cancer in men demands attention now.

Prostate cancer originates in the prostate gland, a small walnut-sized organ nestled below the bladder and near the penis, responsible for producing seminal fluid. According to the World Health Organization, it claims lakhs of lives annually, with higher incidences in Europe and America compared to Asia. While it often grows slowly without early signs, family history, advancing age, genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, and poor habits like obesity, excessive red meat or processed food intake, smoking, and sedentary lifestyles amplify the risk. The dominant type is adenocarcinoma, arising from gland cells, though rarer forms like squamous or transitional cell carcinomas exist.

Symptoms mimic routine urinary issues, making them easy to overlook. Dr Rohit Kapoor, a specialist at Max Hospital, warns, “Initial signs include difficulty in urination, frequent urges — especially at night —burning sensation, or a weak stream. Advanced stages bring blood in urine, persistent back or hip pain, leg swelling, weakness, and unexplained weight loss. If it spreads to bones or organs, complications soar.”

Prevention is key. Dr Kapoor advises regular PSA blood tests and digital rectal exams, maintaining a healthy weight through exercise, adopting a balanced diet low in red meat and processed foods, quitting smoking and alcohol, and prompt screening for those with a family history. “Don’t ignore odd symptoms — timely action can extend life significantly,” he emphasises.

By staying vigilant, men can outsmart this silent foe and safeguard their health.
