New Delhi: Kidney stones are becoming increasingly common among young and middle-aged adults, and doctors say daily eating habits may be one of the biggest reasons behind the painful condition. While many people blame dehydration alone, health experts warn that several commonly consumed foods — including some considered healthy — can silently increase the risk of stone formation.
According to kidney specialists, foods rich in oxalates are among the biggest triggers for calcium oxalate stones, the most common type of kidney stone. Spinach, beetroot, nuts, chocolate, sweet potatoes and black tea contain high amounts of oxalates that can combine with calcium in urine and form crystals inside the kidneys.
Doctors also caution against excessive salt consumption. Processed snacks, chips, packaged foods and fast food increase sodium levels in the body, forcing the kidneys to release more calcium into urine — a major factor linked to stone formation.
Another major concern is high animal protein intake. Regular consumption of red meat, chicken, eggs and seafood may raise uric acid levels while reducing citrate, a substance that helps prevent stones from forming.
Sugary soft drinks and cola beverages are also under the scanner. Experts say phosphoric acid, excess sugar and caffeine in dark sodas may contribute to dehydration and increase the likelihood of kidney stones, especially in people who already have a history of the condition.
However, doctors stress that people should not completely stop eating calcium-rich foods. In fact, adequate dietary calcium may actually help reduce kidney stone risk by preventing oxalate absorption inside the body.
Health experts recommend drinking plenty of water, reducing salt intake, limiting processed food and maintaining a balanced diet to lower the chances of developing kidney stones.
