New Delhi: During summer, diabetes patients have to pay more attention to their health, as the chances of an increase in blood sugar levels are higher. These hot temperatures can lead to increased thirst, and many people opt for sugar-laden drinks, cane juice, or cold drinks, which may make it more difficult. What diabetes patients should steer clear of — and what they should switch to instead, experts say — in the summer months.
Delhi physician and senior resident of the RML Hospital, Dr Subhash Giri, says, “Sweet drinks, for example cold drinks and cane juice, respond quickly to raising blood sugar levels.” Diabetes patients, instead, should choose drinks such as lemon water, coconut water, or unsweetened herbal teas which are safer for hydration.
He adds that processed food, which is typically rich in sugar and salt, should be stayed away from, as it can increase blood sugar. A more viable option includes meals that have sugar-free merchandise, such as fruits, veggies, and whole grains, without adding sugar.
Dr Giri also pointed out that many people have the habit of drinking beer during the summer, but the effect of this alcohol is high on blood sugar. Diabetics should limit or entirely forgo alcohol, simply because it impairs blood sugar regulation and put their health at risk.
Further, although people often drink hot tea and espresso during the summer season, excess caffeine could alter blood sugar. Diabetes patients should avoid caffeine, while herbal teas or decaffeinated coffee are safe to include in the diet.
In conclusion, Dr Giri has another key frame of mind for managing diabetes over summer, eating healthy food. ” There is nothing wrong with consuming food, but eating healthy.”
