New Delhi: As UPI fraud cases continue to rise across India, millions of users are now asking the same question — which payment app is actually the safest: BHIM, Paytm or PhonePe?

The answer, experts say, depends less on flashy features and more on security architecture, fraud response systems and user awareness. According to cybersecurity specialists, all three major UPI platforms follow RBI and NPCI security guidelines, but there are key differences in how they handle protection layers and suspicious activity.

Government-backed BHIM is often considered the most straightforward and secure option because of its minimal interface and direct integration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). With fewer third-party services and advertisements, experts believe the chances of phishing manipulation are comparatively lower.

Meanwhile, PhonePe and Paytm offer stronger commercial ecosystems, faster customer support and advanced fraud-detection technology powered by AI-based monitoring systems. Both apps also provide biometric locks, device verification and instant payment alerts.

Cyber experts, however, warn that no app can guarantee complete safety if users unknowingly share OTPs, click fake links or approve fraudulent “collect requests”. Most recent UPI scams have happened due to social engineering rather than app-level hacking.

The biggest advantage of BHIM remains trust and simplicity. The strength of PhonePe and Paytm lies in convenience and advanced features. But in the end, security often depends on the user’s own digital habits.

Because in India’s booming cashless economy, one careless tap can sometimes cost far more than a failed transaction.
