Mumbai: What once looked impossible in the IPL has now become reality. Five-time champions Mumbai Indians are officially out of IPL 2026 — and the numbers behind their collapse have left fans stunned.
For the first time in franchise history, Mumbai Indians have now gone six consecutive IPL seasons without winning the trophy, making it their longest title drought ever. Their previous longest wait lasted five seasons between 2008 and 2012 before they finally lifted the title in 2013.
The latest heartbreak came after a last-ball defeat against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a result that officially knocked Hardik Pandya’s side out of the playoff race. But the elimination is only part of the story.
Mumbai Indians also suffered another unwanted first this season — they failed to win a single match against both Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the same IPL edition. Against CSK, MI lost twice, including a crushing 103-run defeat. RCB too completed a double over Mumbai this season.
The franchise that once dominated the league with titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 now finds itself battling inconsistency, injury concerns and questions over leadership.
Head coach Mahela Jayawardene admitted after the latest loss that the team simply “wasn’t good enough” this year.
What has shocked fans most is how quickly the aura around Mumbai Indians has faded. A team once feared for its comeback mentality is now becoming associated with missed chances and unfinished campaigns.
And for MI supporters, the biggest concern may not be this season’s exit — but the fear that the dynasty itself is slowly slipping away.
