With the new BS-VI emission norms set to kick in from April 2020, old small diesel engines are no longer viable for upgrades.
Maruti is discontinuing the 1.3-litre 75bhp diesel engine from the Ertiga MUV, according to media reports.
This Fiat-sourced MultiJet diesel engine, nicknamed ‘India’s National Engine’, is used in most smaller cars of of Maruti.
The Ertiga will continue to be available in the 1.5-litre 105bhp petrol engine.
Maruti has a 1.5-litre 95hp diesel engine that does duty on the Ciaz.
The number two carmaker in India, Hyundai too on Wednesday decided to pull the plug on the Grand i10 diesel. The Grand i10 gets a new avatar as Grand i10 Nios but the older generation car will also continue with a petrol engine.
