This upcoming phase of population enumeration will notably include queries regarding caste identities and the location of COVID vaccination. In a historic move, the national census will gather detailed caste information for the first time, asking citizens whether they belong to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, or other specific categories.
The second phase of this monumental exercise is scheduled to begin early in the high altitude regions. The enumeration process for Leh and Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will take place from September 1 to September 30. Authorities carefully selected this window as the weather remains clear and accessible for government employees navigating these challenging mountainous terrains.
Before the official door to door survey begins, residents in these four regions will have the unique opportunity to participate through a self enumeration process. This convenient digital reporting facility will be available from August 17 to August 31. Following this period, field workers will visit households throughout September to complete the task. The reference point for this phase has been set for midnight on October 1 2026, with a final revision round planned between October 1 and October 5.
A significant aspect of the upcoming population count is the streamlined approach to recording caste data. Citizens will simply declare their caste without needing to present any supporting certificates or legal documents. The digital application used by enumerators will feature a drop down menu strictly tailored to show the specific Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe list applicable to that particular state. The declared caste will be recorded exactly as stated by the individual respondent.
The exhaustive questionnaire aims to capture a deeply detailed demographic and socioeconomic profile of the nation. Beyond basic details like name, age, sex, and marital status, the survey will collect data on the nationality, religion, mother tongue, and digital literacy levels of every citizen. It also includes comprehensive sections on educational qualifications, employment status over the past year, and the exact nature of economic activity. Furthermore, respondents will be asked to share their Aadhaar number, voter identification number, and passport details, though providing these particular numbers remains entirely optional.
