New Delhi: Millions of people travel daily by Indian Railways, which offers various classes of accommodation like Sleeper, Third AC, Second AC, and First AC. To make it easier for passengers to identify their designated compartments, the railway authorities use specific alphabetical codes on the exterior of the train coaches. While most frequent travelers know that the letter S stands for Sleeper, B for Third AC, and A for Second AC, many are often left completely confused when they come across an AB coach.

The AB coach is a unique combination compartment provided in certain passenger trains across the country. As the name suggests, it is a hybrid carriage that accommodates both Second AC and Third AC passengers within a single physical coach. A specific section of this compartment is designed according to standard Third AC specifications, while the remaining half features the spacious seating and sleeping arrangements of a Second AC coach.

This dual configuration often leads to major confusion among passengers, primarily because the seat numbers can repeat within the same compartment. For instance, the coach might have two different berths labeled as seat number three, with one located in the Second AC section and the other in the Third AC section. Passengers allotted a berth in the AB coach must carefully verify their ticket class before settling into a seat to avoid accidentally occupying the wrong berth.

Railway officials explain that identifying the correct section is quite simple if passengers observe a few basic interior differences. The easiest way to spot the Third AC area is by looking for the middle berth, which is entirely absent in the Second AC section where only lower and upper berths are provided. Furthermore, the Second AC section offers added privacy with privacy curtains installed in front of the seating cubicles, a premium feature that is not available in the Third AC section.

Despite knowing these structural differences, if a passenger still struggles to locate their designated berth in an AB coach, railway authorities advise them to immediately seek assistance from the onboard Train Ticket Examiner. Understanding these basic coach codes ensures a smooth, comfortable, and hassle free journey for every traveler.
