New Delhi: With thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rainfall affecting several parts of the country during the monsoon season, insurance experts have clarified the rules regarding compensation if a tree falls on a vehicle and causes damage. The issue has gained attention as many vehicle owners remain uncertain about whether such incidents are covered under standard motor insurance policies.
According to insurance industry guidelines, compensation for damage caused by a falling tree is generally available only if the vehicle is covered under a comprehensive motor insurance policy. Unlike third party insurance, which is mandatory and covers damage caused to others, comprehensive insurance provides protection against a wider range of risks, including natural calamities and accidental damage.
Experts explain that if a tree collapses on a parked or moving vehicle during a storm, cyclone, heavy rainfall or strong winds, the policyholder can file a claim with the insurer. The insurance company typically assesses the extent of the damage through a survey before approving repairs or compensation. The final claim amount may depend on factors such as the vehicle’s condition, depreciation and policy terms.
However, policyholders should note that a third party insurance policy alone will not cover such losses. Since third party insurance is designed to compensate victims of road accidents involving the insured vehicle, damage caused by natural events to the owner’s own vehicle falls outside its scope. As a result, motorists relying solely on third party coverage may have to bear the repair costs themselves.
Insurance advisors recommend that vehicle owners document the incident immediately by taking photographs and videos of the damaged vehicle and the fallen tree. They should also inform the insurance company without delay and follow the claim procedure prescribed by the insurer. In some cases, a police report may also be required, depending on the extent of damage and local regulations.
The issue assumes greater significance during the monsoon season, when incidents involving uprooted trees, flooding and storm related vehicle damage become more common across Indian cities. Experts say that comprehensive motor insurance can provide valuable financial protection against such unforeseen events.
Consumer advocates also advise policyholders to carefully review their insurance documents and understand exclusions, deductibles and claim conditions. Awareness about coverage details can help avoid disputes and ensure a smoother claims process when emergencies occur.
