Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s swearing in ceremony drew nationwide attention not only because of the political transition in the state but also due to the symbolism associated with his oath taking. Shivakumar took the oath of office while holding a copy of the Constitution of India and walked barefoot to the dais, a gesture that sparked widespread discussion in political and public circles.
The Congress leader was sworn in as Karnataka’s 18th Chief Minister at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru on June 3. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of office and secrecy in the presence of senior Congress leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and several leaders from Congress ruled states.
One of the most talked about moments of the ceremony was Shivakumar carrying a copy of the Constitution while taking the oath. Political observers noted that the move reflected the Congress party’s continued emphasis on constitutional values and democratic institutions. Similar symbolism has frequently featured in the party’s political messaging in recent years.
Equally significant was Shivakumar’s decision to approach the stage barefoot. According to reports, the newly sworn in Chief Minister first sought blessings from religious leaders present at the venue before proceeding to the dais. He also took the oath in the name of his spiritual guide, Veera Gangadhara Ajjayya, popularly known as Gangadhar Ajja, highlighting the blend of personal faith and public office that marked the occasion.
The ceremony was attended by a wide range of political leaders, religious figures, industrialists, and cultural personalities. Senior Congress leaders projected the event as a display of unity following the leadership transition from Siddaramaiah to Shivakumar. The two leaders shared the stage, reinforcing the party’s message of cohesion after months of speculation over the change in leadership.
Shivakumar, a veteran Congress leader and eight time MLA, assumed office after being elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party. His elevation to the top post follows years of organisational work within the party and his tenure as Deputy Chief Minister.
While the political significance of the leadership change remains substantial, the imagery from the oath taking ceremony has become a focal point of public discussion. For supporters, the Constitution in hand and the barefoot walk symbolised humility, faith, and commitment to constitutional governance. For political observers, the ceremony reflected the Congress party’s attempt to combine symbolism with a message of political continuity as Karnataka enters a new phase under Shivakumar’s leadership.
