Mumbai: As the Christmas and New Year season approaches, bank customers across India are advised to schedule their transactions wisely, with several closures lined up in December 2025 under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines.

The month features a mix of regional festivals, commemorative days, and the nationwide Christmas holiday on December 25 (Thursday), when all banks will remain shut to mark the occasion. In addition, states like Mizoram, Nagaland, and Meghalaya will see extended breaks around Christmas, including Christmas Eve on December 24 and continuations on December 26 and 27.

Other notable state-specific closures include December 1 for State Inauguration Day and Indigenous Faith Day in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland; December 3 for the Feast of St Francis Xavier in Goa; December 19 for Goa Liberation Day; and the Losoong/Namsoong festivals in Sikkim on December 20 and 22. Meghalaya observes multiple death anniversaries, such as those of Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma (December 12), U Soso Tham (December 18), and U Kiang Nangbah (December 30). December 31 marks New Year’s Eve and Imoinu Iratpa in Mizoram and Manipur.

Besides these, banks will close on all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays going by RBI norms. Digital services such as net banking, UPI, and ATMs will remain unaffected.

With up to 18 holidays in certain regions when including weekends, experts recommend completing essential branch visits early to avoid last-minute hurdles during this busy year-end period.
