At the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference at ICAR Pusa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his strong support for Indian farmers, fishers, and dairy producers, despite the rising trade tensions with the United States.

Modiemphasised that the interests of Indian farmers are a priority, indicating his readiness to face any consequences in order to safeguard the nation’s agriculture.

Protecting India’s Farming Sector

Speaking at the event, PM Modi stated that the well-being of farmers, fishers and dairy producers is what matters most and that India will always protect their interests. He knows this position might not be easy, but he’s ready for it. The move comes as India and the US disagree on trade, mainly on agriculture and dairy.

India has stood firm against US requests to lower tariffs in these important areas. As the world’s biggest milk producer, India has always protected its dairy business, disallowing dairy imports from cows fed non-vegetarian diets, as it goes against Indian culture. Modi emphasised that India can’t accept dairy products that don’t align with its values.

A Plan For Rural Success

The Prime Minister talked about the government’s work to help rural areas by raising farmers’ incomes, lowering farming costs, and creating new income opportunities. He mentioned initiatives like the PM Dhan Dhanya Yojana, which focuses on improving infrastructure and money support in 100 underdeveloped farming areas.

Modi also mentioned the success of schemes like the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, which gives direct money to small farmers, and the PM Fasal Bima Yojana, which offers crop insurance. The PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana has worked on irrigation problems, and the creation of 10,000 farm producer organisations (FPOs) has helped small farmers work together. Additionally, cooperatives and self-help groups have received financial support, which has boosted the rural economy, while the e-NAM platform has facilitated the sale of agricultural products.

Building Confidence Through Plans

Looking back at what his government has done, Modi noted that the plans over the last 10 years have not just given aid but also made farmers more confident. He stated that they have built trust. He further stated that their schemes have empowered farmers to pursue more ambitious dreams. The PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, for example, has helped small farmers, and the Fasal Bima Yojana has protected them from losses.

As the US tariff issue continues, Modi’s firm position shows India’s determination to protect its agriculture and dairy industries, even if it means tense relationships.
