Crime and Cover-Up? CBI Scrutinises Suspect’s Moves in Doctor’s Death

Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is actively probing the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata, an incident that has triggered widespread protests across the country. As part of the investigation, the CBI questioned former principal Sandeep Ghosh extensively on Friday afternoon.

According to sources within the central agency, three of the victim’s fellow doctors have also been interrogated to ascertain details about the night of the tragic crime. The agency is focusing on reconstructing the timeline of events, particularly the details surrounding the group dinner the victim shared with her colleagues. The statements of these doctors have been officially recorded as part of the ongoing investigation.

One of the crucial pieces of evidence is CCTV footage that captured the movements of the prime suspect, Sanjay Rai. The footage shows Rai entering the hospital at approximately 11:00 pm on the night of the incident, where he remains for about 30 minutes. He returns to the hospital between 3:45 and 3:50 am and is seen heading towards the seminar room. Around 35 minutes later, Rai exits the room, raising serious suspicions.

Investigators have also noted that the victim and her friends ordered food via an online delivery service at around midnight. The CBI has recorded the statement of the delivery person, and the post-mortem report indicates that the victim died 3 to 4 hours after her last meal. Statements from four doctors who dined with the victim that evening have also been taken to piece together the sequence of events.

In addition to these efforts, the CBI is recording testimonies from individuals who interacted with the victim in the hours leading up to the crime. The agency is also conducting a thorough investigation into Sanjay Rai’s mobile phone data, including tracking his movements on the night of the incident through his phone’s location records.

As the investigation deepens, the CBI continues to gather evidence and connect the dots in this high-profile case that has gripped the nation and drawn intense scrutiny from all quarters.
