Singhvi’s Second Chance: Congress Nominates Senior Advocate for Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: The Congress party has officially nominated veteran leader and senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election from Telangana. The announcement was made through a letter issued by Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, quoting the party’s national president, Mallikarjun Kharge. The letter, dated August 14, confirms Singhvi’s candidature, and he is widely expected to secure a win, with the numbers appearing to be in his favor.

Singhvi expressed his gratitude towards the party leadership following the announcement, saying, “My heartfelt gratitude to Congress President Kharge, Soniaji and Rahulji, Priyankaji, and all senior leadership for reposing faith in me.”

To strengthen Singhvi’s chances of victory, the Congress had earlier brought BRS Rajya Sabha MP K Keshava Rao into its fold on June 3. Rao was subsequently appointed as an advisor to the Chief Minister with cabinet minister status, despite having two years remaining in his Rajya Sabha term. This strategic move is seen as a clear attempt to secure Singhvi’s position in the Rajya Sabha.

Singhvi, a prominent legal expert and senior advocate at the Supreme Court, has a long history of legal and political expertise. His father, L M Singhvi, was also a renowned legal authority. Abhishek Manu Singhvi has previously served as a Rajya Sabha MP and is known for his deep knowledge of constitutional law.

The upcoming Rajya Sabha election, set to take place next month, marks another significant moment in Singhvi’s political career. Nominations for the election opened on August 14, with the last date for filing nominations being August 22. The polling is scheduled for September 3.

This by-election follows Singhvi’s earlier unsuccessful bid for the Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh, where he faced a surprising defeat. In that contest, Singhvi and his opponent, former Congress leader Harsh Mahajan, both received 34 votes, leading to a draw. A slip was drawn to determine the winner, resulting in Singhvi’s loss.

With his nomination from Telangana, Singhvi is now poised for a comeback to the Rajya Sabha, backed by the full support of the Congress leadership.
