Birmingham: Following a disappointing 4-0 whitewash in the T20I series, a revamped Indian side is set to take on England in the first of the three-match ODI series at Edgbaston on Tuesday. Looking to settle the scores, the Indian team management has opted for a massive overhaul, introducing seven specialist players into the setup as the format shifts to the 50-over game.

Senior stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return to the squad, bringing much-needed experience to the top order. They are joined by other key inclusions such as Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, Shubman Gill, and the tall young pacer Gurnoor Brar. Under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, this new-look side aims to provide a stiffer challenge to the high-flying English team on their home turf.

The opening combination is now set, with Rohit Sharma returning to partner captain Shubman Gill at the top. This duo is expected to provide the solid foundation that was missing during the T20Is. Following them is the reliable Virat Kohli at number three, while vice-captain Shreyas Iyer and wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul will occupy the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.

This settled top five offers a blend of aggression and stability. The middle order, however, presents a selection headache. The management is reportedly weighing up between Ishan Kishan and Shivam Dube for the number six slot. Dube appears to be the frontrunner due to his ability to chip in with medium-pace overs, providing the captain with an extra bowling option.

The bowling department sees the return of Jasprit Bumrah, who will lead the pace attack alongside Arshdeep Singh. The inclusion of Gurnoor Brar has generated significant buzz; the six-foot-six-inch pacer is being viewed as the “trump card” for this series, with his height and bounce likely to trouble the English batters in Birmingham conditions.

In the spin department, Kuldeep Yadav is slated to be the primary specialist spinner. The final spot in the playing XI remains a toss-up between all-rounders Washington Sundar and Axar Patel, depending on the pitch conditions at Edgbaston.

With the 2027 World Cup cycle in focus, this series serves as a crucial testing ground for India’s ODI combinations. While England remains a formidable opponent, especially after their dominant T20 performance, the return of India’s core senior group makes this a highly anticipated contest. Fans will be eager to see if the fresh faces and returning legends can turn the tide in India’s favor.
