Mohali/Deoband: In a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the 2022 rocket propelled grenade attack on the Punjab Police Intelligence Headquarters in Mohali, security agencies have arrested a suspected terror associate from Deoband in Uttar Pradesh.
The accused is alleged to have played a key supporting role in the conspiracy behind the RPG attack that targeted the intelligence wing headquarters in Mohali on May 9, 2022. The attack had raised serious concerns about the resurgence of cross border terror networks and their ability to strike high security installations in Punjab.
According to investigators, the arrested suspect was allegedly involved in providing logistical assistance and support to operatives linked to the terror module responsible for the attack. Security agencies believe the accused maintained contacts with individuals associated with foreign based handlers and helped facilitate movement and coordination among conspirators.
The arrest was made following sustained intelligence gathering and coordinated operations by central and state agencies. Officials said the suspect had been under surveillance for some time and was apprehended from Deoband after investigators gathered evidence linking him to the wider conspiracy. The agencies are now examining his communication records, financial transactions and connections with other accused persons.
The Mohali RPG attack was one of the most high profile security incidents in Punjab in recent years. A rocket propelled grenade was fired at the Punjab Police Intelligence Headquarters in Mohali, damaging part of the building. Though there were no casualties, the attack exposed serious security concerns and triggered a multi agency investigation. Authorities had suspected the involvement of foreign based terror operatives and organised extremist networks from the beginning of the probe.
Investigating agencies have already arrested several individuals in connection with the case over the past few years. The National Investigation Agency and Punjab Police have maintained that the conspiracy was orchestrated by foreign based handlers who allegedly used social media and local contacts to recruit and guide operatives on the ground.
Officials said the latest arrest could help uncover additional details about the planning, logistics and support network behind the attack. Further interrogation of the accused is underway, and agencies have not ruled out more arrests in the coming days.
The development is being viewed as another important step in the ongoing efforts to dismantle terror modules and prevent future attacks on security establishments in the region.
