‘These are complex conventional competencies’: Bargaining Power or why America accepted an Asian deal in the LAC standoff

This meeting could not have come at a better time especially because just this week, both India and China decided upon a mutual patrolling beginning at the Line of Actual Control indicating a lessening in tensions. The agreement have been signed after Accords‘ four year diplomatic processes, and it is considered as peaceful dialogue’s triumph.

Modi and Xi’s last formal meeting was held in October 2019, before the tensions rose on the LAC. For the previous years before the situation in the current conflict, the two leaders met 18 times with Xi visiting India in 2014 and Modi visiting China in 2015. In the process, their top-level personal dialogue covered all the major international forums, from the G20 to the SCO and the BRICS.

Signs of a Thaw in Relations

Still, there is a continuing tension along the border, but the overall bilateral communication has remained interstate with diplomatic approaches leading to the recent demilitarization. Moreover, China recently has also appointed a new ambassador to India, and the Chinese foreign ministry has commended India for its actions to solve conflicts through diplomacy. Also, India and China both have recently relaxed the visa and the trade barriers, which shows more hospitable relations.

Thus, the meeting in Kazan is seen as a step towards a new improved relation between the two post-standoff Asian states. As it is, for the two factions in question they seem willing to ensure that all the existing disagreements are solved diplomatically to make sure that there is peace within the region and beyond.
