Kolkata: Amid growing turmoil within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), senior party leader and MP Kalyan Banerjee has strongly defended Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, declaring that she remains the party’s undisputed supreme leader and warning rebels against challenging her authority.
His remarks come at a time when the TMC is grappling with one of the biggest internal crises in its history following a rebellion by a section of party legislators and leaders. Reports suggest that the dissent within the party has triggered intense political uncertainty in West Bengal, with rival camps attempting to assert their influence over the future direction of the organisation.
Addressing the ongoing developments, Kalyan Banerjee made it clear that Mamata Banerjee continues to command the trust and loyalty of the party’s core leadership and workers. He asserted that there was no question of replacing or sidelining the TMC founder and warned dissidents against creating confusion within the organisation.
The TMC leader also spoke about Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s National General Secretary, whose role has increasingly become a subject of debate amid the ongoing rebellion. Political observers and reports from within the party indicate that much of the dissatisfaction among the rebel camp appears to be directed at Abhishek’s leadership style rather than at Mamata Banerjee herself. Despite the criticism, the party leadership has maintained that Abhishek continues to enjoy the confidence of the organisation.
The comments come against the backdrop of major political developments in the state. Rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee recently claimed that the Assembly Speaker had recognised the dissident group as a separate legislative formation and appointed him as the Leader of the Opposition, a move that has significantly escalated the confrontation between the two camps.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has accused political opponents of orchestrating attempts to weaken and destabilise the party. She has launched an extensive damage control exercise, reaching out to dissatisfied legislators and senior leaders in an effort to preserve unity within the TMC.
With speculation continuing over the future of the party and reports of growing contacts between rebel legislators and a section of MPs, the coming weeks are expected to be crucial for the Trinamool Congress. While the rebels seek organisational changes, the official leadership remains firm that Mamata Banerjee will continue to be the party’s central figure and guiding force.
