New Delhi: New revelations continue to emerge about Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who is currently facing serious allegations in connection with the Kolkata rape case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches across several properties linked to Ghosh on Friday, uncovering a palatial bungalow in Canning, South 24 Parganas, two flats, and a four-storey house in Beleghata, Kolkata. A brand-new SUV was also found parked in the garage of his Beleghata residence.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the ED are jointly probing the case against Ghosh, who is suspected of being involved in financial irregularities and alleged misconduct at RG Kar Medical College. The investigations intensified following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the hospital’s seminar hall last month.
According to a caretaker of a nearby building, two recently identified flats belong to Ghosh. He reportedly used one flat on the ground floor as an office and the other on the third floor, but he was seen visiting these flats only occasionally. The newly purchased SUV, bought around 3-4 months ago, was also observed in the parking area, yet there were no nameplates to identify the flats’ owner.
ED officials believe that Ghosh intentionally avoided registering his name on these properties to conceal his identity. The flats are situated within walking distance of his main residence, Balaji Niwas, which has raised eyebrows due to their proximity and the sheer number of properties owned by Ghosh. Additionally, Ghosh owns a luxurious bungalow in Canning, complete with a large garden and swimming pool.
On 2nd September, the CBI arrested Ghosh, along with three others, over alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The arrest came in the wake of the tragic incident involving the trainee doctor, which has sparked outrage and demands for justice.
The ED launched its own investigations by conducting raids at nine locations in Kolkata and its surrounding areas, targeting properties linked to Ghosh. The raids are part of a broader probe into financial irregularities at the hospital during Ghosh’s tenure as principal.
The investigations, led by both the CBI and ED, were initiated after the 31-year-old trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered in the hospital on 9th August, triggering a nationwide outcry and calls for a thorough investigation.
