New Delhi: On the occasion of Kargil Day, several state governments, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand, announced reservations for Agniveers in state police and other government services. The Agniveer scheme, launched by the Modi government, aims to recruit capable and disciplined youth into the armed forces, with many states now extending support through various forms of reservation in state services.
Uttar Pradesh: The Yogi Adityanath government announced that Agniveers returning from service will receive weightage in state police and PAC force recruitment. While specific details on the weightage were not provided, CM Yogi emphasised the scheme’s potential to produce trained and disciplined young soldiers. He criticised opposition parties for politicising the initiative and highlighted upcoming large-scale police recruitment in the state.
Uttarakhand: CM Pushkar Singh Dhami announced plans to provide reservations for Agniveers in all government services. The state government is considering introducing an Act to facilitate this reservation and is also preparing a skill development programme for Agniveers. The CM has directed officials to develop a comprehensive plan to support these trained individuals.
Madhya Pradesh: The Mohan Yadav government declared that Agniveers will be given reservation in police and armed forces recruitment. CM Yadav highlighted the scheme’s goal of modernising the armed forces and maintaining their youthfulness. He expressed alignment with PM Modi’s vision for the Agnipath scheme, aiming to keep the forces combat-ready and fit.
Chhattisgarh: Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced that Agniveers would receive priority reservation in police constable, forest guard, and other similar posts. The state government plans to issue guidelines soon to implement these reservations, recognising the skills and dedication of Agniveers returning from military service.
Odisha: The state government announced a 10 % reservation for Agniveers in state services, along with a five-year age relaxation during recruitment. The government praised the Agniveer Yojana as a historic initiative by PM Modi, emphasising its role in preparing resilient and fearless youth for various challenges.
Rajasthan: The Bhajanlal Sharma government also extended reservations for Agniveers in state police, gaol guard, and forest guard recruitment. CM Sharma highlighted the dedication and patriotism of Agniveers, noting that the reservation would provide these individuals with opportunities to serve the state after their military service.
The announcements have been met with mixed reactions, with some praising the initiative as a recognition of the contributions of Agniveers, while others criticise it as a political manoeuvre. Nonetheless, these measures mark a significant step in supporting the transition of Agniveers into civilian life and employment.
