Chennai: In a major political development that could reshape Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party and announced the launch of a new political movement, signalling the beginning of an independent political journey. The BJP has officially accepted his resignation from the party’s primary membership.

Announcing his decision, Annamalai said his move was aimed at creating an alternative political platform that would challenge what he described as “cult and dynastic politics.” He also confirmed that he intends to actively participate in future Assembly elections and build a new political force in the state.

The former IPS officer unveiled a new movement named “We The Leaders,” which he described as a platform for individuals passionate about education, healthcare, sustainability and youth leadership. According to Annamalai, the initiative seeks to promote people centric governance and leadership while bridging the gap between technological advancement and public welfare.

Annamalai’s resignation comes after weeks of speculation regarding his future within the BJP. Political observers had pointed to growing differences between him and the party’s central leadership, particularly over electoral strategy in Tamil Nadu and the BJP’s alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the recent Assembly elections. Reports suggested that Annamalai favoured a more independent political approach for the BJP in the state.

The BJP formally acknowledged his departure, with party president Nitin Nabin accepting the resignation. The development marks the end of Annamalai’s nearly six year association with the party, during which he emerged as one of the BJP’s most recognisable faces in Tamil Nadu.

The political impact of the move became evident within hours, as Tamil Nadu BJP Vice President Karu Nagarajan also resigned from the party and announced support for Annamalai’s newly launched movement. The development has fuelled speculation about the possibility of more leaders and workers joining the former BJP leader in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran downplayed the significance of Annamalai’s exit, stating that the party would continue its organisational work without disruption.

With Tamil Nadu politics witnessing the emergence of a new political platform, attention will now focus on whether Annamalai’s movement evolves into a full fledged political party and how it impacts the state’s traditional political equations in the years ahead.
