New Delhi: Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply on Thursday after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it had targeted an American airbase in retaliation for a US strike near Bandar Abbas, one of Iran’s most strategic port cities. The latest exchange has raised fresh concerns over the fragile security situation around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil movement.
According to the report, the IRGC said the retaliatory attack was carried out at around 4.50 am local time after what it described as an American strike near Bandar Abbas port. However, the Iranian force did not identify which US airbase it had targeted. The IRGC also warned that any repeat of such attacks would invite a stronger and more decisive response from Iran.
The United States, on the other hand, described its action as defensive. A US official cited by Reuters said American forces struck an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was allegedly preparing to launch another drone. The official also said US forces had downed four Iranian one way attack drones near the Strait of Hormuz.
The escalation has also affected neighbouring countries. Kuwait said its defence systems were intercepting missiles and drones heading towards its airspace. This has created concern across the Gulf region, where several countries host US military facilities and depend heavily on safe maritime movement through the Hormuz route.
The latest confrontation comes even as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remain under strain. The two sides had been involved in talks aimed at reducing tensions and stabilising the situation around the Strait of Hormuz. However, the fresh military exchange has again raised doubts over whether the peace process can move forward without further escalation.
Bandar Abbas holds major strategic value for Iran because of its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz. Any instability in this region can affect oil shipments, insurance costs and commercial shipping routes. This is why even limited strikes in the area are closely watched by global markets and regional powers.
For now, both sides appear to be sending military and diplomatic messages at the same time. The US says its strikes are meant to protect its forces and commercial traffic, while Iran is presenting its response as retaliation. The immediate challenge for both countries will be to prevent the latest exchange from turning into a wider conflict.
