New Delhi: The murder of Delhi University Assistant Professor Debosmita Paul has sent shockwaves through the academic community, with investigators uncovering several crucial details that are helping piece together the circumstances surrounding the crime.
Debosmita Paul, an Assistant Professor in the English Department of Shivaji College, was found dead inside her apartment in East Delhi’s Vasundhara Enclave on Thursday. The case came to light after her elder sister, Devarati Paul, alerted police when repeated calls to the professor went unanswered. Upon reaching the apartment, she found it locked from the outside and discovered her sister’s body after breaking open the lock.
According to police and forensic findings, the victim suffered severe head injuries, while wounds on her hands suggested she had tried to resist the attacker. Investigators also found indications that both blunt and sharp objects may have been used during the assault.
One of the most significant revelations in the case is that there were no signs of forced entry into the flat. This has led investigators to suspect that the attacker was known to the victim and may have been allowed inside willingly.
Police have ruled out robbery as the primary motive since valuables, including the professor’s jewellery, were found untouched inside the apartment. The investigation is now focusing on personal and professional angles.
Sources revealed that Paul had been involved in divorce proceedings with her Bengaluru based husband for the past several years. Investigators are examining whether the ongoing matrimonial dispute has any connection with the murder.
Another key development emerged from CCTV footage. Investigators are reportedly examining the movements of masked visitors who entered the residential complex shortly before the suspected time of the crime. Police have questioned a cab driver linked to the visitors and are tracing their identities.
Colleagues disclosed that Paul was scheduled to appear for a promotion interview on the day she was found dead. She had also reportedly sent medicines to her mother shortly before the incident. Her sudden disappearance from professional commitments first raised concerns among colleagues.
A murder case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and multiple police teams have been formed to identify and apprehend those responsible. Investigators are analysing CCTV footage, call records, digital evidence and the victim’s recent interactions as the probe continues.
The tragic death of the respected academic has triggered widespread grief among students and faculty members, many of whom remembered her as a dedicated teacher and mentor.
