Kolkata: The West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department has intensified its probe into an alleged forged signature case linked to Trinamool Congress legislators, with CID teams reaching premises associated with former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata.
According to reports, a CID team visited the Trinamool Congress office located within Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence complex. Another team conducted searches at an office on Camac Street associated with Abhishek Banerjee. The action is being seen as a major development in the investigation, which has already triggered political and legal debate in West Bengal.
The case is related to allegations that signatures of several TMC MLAs were forged on a party resolution submitted to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The document was reportedly connected to the recognition of the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. Several legislators are said to have questioned the authenticity of signatures attributed to them, prompting the CID to widen its inquiry.
The development came around the time Abhishek Banerjee was expected to appear before the CID in connection with the case. Reports said he skipped the agency’s third notice and informed investigators that he had prior commitments in Delhi. He has also challenged the case and filed an appeal that is pending before the Calcutta High Court.
The CID’s visit to locations linked to the two top TMC leaders has added a fresh political dimension to the matter. While the investigating agency has not publicly disclosed all details of the searches, officials are believed to be examining documents and gathering evidence related to the alleged forgery.
The Trinamool Congress has not accepted the allegations as established facts, and the matter remains under investigation. With the case now reaching offices linked to the party’s most prominent faces, the controversy is likely to remain at the centre of Bengal politics.
