New Delhi: In Hinduism, Amavasya (the new moon day) holds immense spiritual significance, particularly for remembering and honouring one’s ancestors. Among these, the Bhadrapada Amavasya is considered exceptionally auspicious for performing traditional rituals like ‘Snan’ (holy bath), ‘Daan’ (charity), and ‘Pitru Tarpan’ (offerings to ancestors). With this significant day approaching, devotees must be aware of the exact date, timings, and religious practices to observe.

Bhadrapada Amavasya 2026 Date And Timings According to the Hindu Panchang, the Amavasya Tithi of the Bhadrapada month will begin on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 10:33 AM. The Tithi will conclude the following day on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 8:56 AM.

Although the Tithi begins on September 10, following the traditional ‘Udaya Tithi’ (sunrise timing) principle, Bhadrapada Amavasya will be predominantly observed and celebrated on September 11. Conversely, the Pithori Vrat, which is traditionally linked with this period, will be observed on September 10.

When To Perform Snan And Daan? The rituals of taking a holy bath and making charitable donations are central to Amavasya observances. Since the Amavasya Tithi will be present at the time of sunrise on September 11, this day is deemed the most appropriate for performing Snan, Daan, and Pitru Tarpan.

According to religious beliefs, waking up early during the ‘Brahma Muhurta’ and taking a bath in a holy river, lake, or even at home with pure water is highly rewarding.

Significance Of Pitru Tarpan And Charity Bhadrapada Amavasya is a dedicated day for seeking the blessings of the ancestors. Following the morning bath, devotees are advised to remember their forefathers with a calm mind and perform Tarpan. It is a widely held belief that Tarpan offered with true devotion satisfies the ancestors, ensuring their continued blessings, peace, and prosperity for the family.

To further appease the ancestors, acts of charity are highly recommended. Depending on one’s capacity, donating food, clothing, grains, or other essential items to the needy is considered highly virtuous. Additionally, feeding the poor while meditating on the ancestors is believed to bring profound spiritual merit.
