New Delhi: In a significant political development, former Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dr. Dinesh Sharma has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The official announcement regarding his new administrative responsibility was made through a communiqué issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan late on Saturday night. According to the official statement from the President’s office, Dr. Sharma’s appointment will come into effect from the date he formally assumes charge of his new office.
Currently serving as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Sharma brings a wealth of administrative and political experience to the strategic Union Territory. His elevation to the crucial gubernatorial post highlights the central leadership’s continued trust in his capabilities.
Before his tenure in the Upper House of Parliament, Dr. Dinesh Sharma played a prominent role in Uttar Pradesh’s state politics. He served as the Deputy Chief Minister in the first term of the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government from 2017 to 2022. During this period, he was instrumental in handling key state portfolios, primarily focusing on higher and secondary education.
Apart from his state-level responsibilities, Dr. Sharma has deep roots in grassroots administration, having notably served two consecutive terms as the Mayor of Lucknow. His academic background as a seasoned professor at Lucknow University has also been a defining aspect of his public and political profile.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands hold immense strategic and geopolitical significance for India due to their crucial location in the Indian Ocean region.
