New Delhi: The upcoming festive season is set to bring unprecedented cheer for prospective vehicle buyers across India. In a major boost to the automotive sector and consumers alike, a combination of recent revisions in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and aggressive dealership discounts is making car purchases significantly cheaper this year.

The primary catalyst for this price drop is the government’s recent restructuring of GST rates on automobiles. Previously, standard petrol and diesel vehicles attracted a steep 28 per cent GST. Under the revised framework, the tax on small cars and two-wheelers (up to 350cc) has been slashed to 18 per cent with no additional cess. Meanwhile, larger vehicles now face a flat 40 per cent tax rate, and electric vehicles (EVs) continue to enjoy a low 5 per cent GST bracket. This strategic tax reduction has inherently lowered the ex-showroom prices of numerous entry-level and mid-segment cars by margins ranging from Rs 50,000 to over Rs 1.5 lakh.

Capitalising on the momentum generated by the tax cuts, leading automakers have unleashed a slew of festive offers ahead of Diwali and Dhanteras—the peak sales period for the Indian auto industry. Manufacturers including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai, Mahindra, and Honda are offering “double benefits” to clear their growing inventory and drive retail sales.

Tata Motors is currently leading the festive charge, offering massive total benefits of up to Rs 3.35 lakh on select models, particularly its EV lineup. Mahindra is closely following, rolling out discounts and exchange bonuses worth up to Rs 2.5 lakh across its popular SUV range. Other major players like Kia India and MG Motor are also offering substantial cash discounts, exchange bonuses, and corporate benefits ranging between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 3 lakh on their premium vehicles.

Industry experts note that this rare alignment of reduced tax burdens and aggressive corporate discounts offers a golden window for consumers. Dealerships are already witnessing a strong surge in footfall and advance bookings. However, financial analysts advise buyers to remain vigilant about their credit scores to secure the best loan interest rates and to carefully read the fine print regarding hidden processing or insurance fees before driving their new vehicles home.
