New Delhi: Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has etched his name in the record books by completing 9,000 runs in T20 cricket. The flamboyant right-hander achieved this monumental feat during the third and final T20 International (T20I) match between India and Afghanistan, played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
Heading into the clash against the Afghans, the Kerala-born cricketer was just 23 runs shy of the 9,000-run mark. Samson reached the milestone in a dramatic fashion during the fourth over of the Indian innings, bowled by veteran Afghan spinner Mohammad Nabi. Backing away to a fullish delivery, he drove the ball towards mid-off for a quick single, officially entering the elite 9,000-run club. He immediately celebrated the landmark by launching Nabi for consecutive sixes in the very same over.
With this achievement, Samson became only the fifth Indian batter to cross the 9,000-run threshold in the shortest format of the game. According to cricket statisticians, he now shares this exclusive space with some of the biggest names in Indian cricket history. Modern-day great Virat Kohli leads the all-time Indian list with 14,218 T20 runs, followed by current Indian captain Rohit Sharma (12,531 runs), Shikhar Dhawan (9,797 runs), and T20I specialist Suryakumar Yadav (9,729 runs). Globally, Samson is the 34th batter to reach this milestone.
Samson eventually went on to score a stroke-filled 50 off 35 deliveries, bringing up his 57th half-century in the 20-over format. His composed yet aggressive knock laid a solid foundation for the hosts. Propelled by his half-century and a blistering 16-ball fifty by his opening partner Abhishek Sharma, India posted a formidable total of 221/7 in their allotted 20 overs.
The Rajasthan Royals skipper has been a consistent performer in the domestic circuit and franchise cricket over the past decade. Following his latest knock, Samson’s T20 tally stands at a towering 9,027 runs from 351 matches at an impressive average of 30.7, featuring eight centuries and 57 half-centuries.
