New Delhi: With viral fevers and seasonal infections becoming increasingly common, many households grapple with age-old doubts regarding basic personal care during illness. Among the most frequent questions is whether it is safe to take a bath while running a temperature. Medical experts have stepped forward to separate fact from fiction, explaining how proper hygiene can be maintained safely without hindering recovery.

Addressing common misconceptions, Dr. R.R. Dutta, Principal Director of Internal Medicine at Paras Health, Gurugram, clarified that bathing during a fever is not entirely prohibited. However, he emphasized that patients must pay close attention to water temperature and their overall physical condition before stepping into the bathroom.

According to medical guidance, taking a quick bath with lukewarm water can provide significant relief from physical fatigue and muscle aches while helping to wash away sweat. However, doctors strongly advise against using very cold or extremely hot water. Extremely cold water can trigger sudden shivering, causing muscles to generate core heat and potentially driving the body’s temperature higher. On the other hand, excessively hot water can induce dizziness or increase discomfort.

Health professionals recommend keeping showers brief when experiencing a mild fever, provided the patient does not suffer from severe weakness, dizziness, or extreme chills. Once finished, individuals should dry themselves thoroughly with a clean towel and rest in a well-ventilated room. For patients who feel too weak to stand or walk to the bathroom, caregivers can opt for a gentle sponge bath using a damp cloth soaked in lukewarm water.

Experts also stress the importance of monitoring warning signs. If a high fever is accompanied by severe symptoms such as persistent vomiting, breathing difficulties, confusion, or a stiff neck, patients should avoid relying solely on home care measures and seek immediate medical attention.
