Mumbai: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has initiated a significant leadership transition ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season, officially appointing veteran batter Siddhesh Lad as the new captain of the Ranji Trophy team. However, a fascinating dilemma remains over who will lead the squad in the shorter formats, with two of India’s biggest T20 stars—Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav—in contention for the white-ball captaincy.
Lad will replace all-rounder Shardul Thakur at the helm of the red-ball side. The decision is primarily a workload management strategy, allowing Thakur to focus on being the team’s premier pace-bowling asset without the added burden of leadership. Thakur had previously taken over the role from Ajinkya Rahane, who retired from all formats in July after leading Mumbai to their 42nd Ranji Trophy title earlier in the year.
The 34-year-old Lad proved his mettle during the last Ranji campaign, amassing a staggering 774 runs in eight matches at an average of 77.40, which included five centuries. Known for his calm temperament, Lad is viewed as the ideal candidate to guide Mumbai as they kick off their Elite Group D campaign against Chandigarh on October 11.
While the red-ball leadership is settled, the MCA faces a “problem of plenty” regarding the white-ball formats. Both Shreyas Iyer, India’s current T20I skipper, and Suryakumar Yadav, the former national T20I captain who led India to World Cup glory, are prime candidates.
Iyer brings fresh domestic momentum, having successfully captained Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title recently. Conversely, Suryakumar’s vast international leadership experience makes him an equally formidable choice.
A senior MCA official addressed the situation, noting that international schedules will likely make the decision for them. “We have both Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav as the choice for white-ball captaincy, but it depends on their availability,” the official was quoted as saying by PTI.
As the domestic white-ball tournaments approach, the MCA will closely monitor the national calendar. Whichever star is available to don the Mumbai jersey will likely be handed the reigns, continuing the city’s rich legacy of producing top-tier cricketing leaders.
