Kolkata: An FIR has been registered against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the organisers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chhatra Parishad at the Hastings police station. The charges stem from the alleged violation of a Calcutta High Court order during the student wing’s foundation day rally held on Cathedral Road on Friday, August 28.
The complaint was officially lodged by Sub-Inspector Apu Baidya, who is posted in the Middle Road area of Kolkata. Registered under Case No. 112, the FIR invokes several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically Sections 61(2), 223, 125(a), 132, and 285.
According to the police complaint, the rally organisers and Banerjee allegedly engaged in a conspiracy to bypass the strict directives laid out by the Calcutta High Court in WPA No. 21728/2026. The court had explicitly instructed that the gathering must be restricted to only one side of Cathedral Road to prevent public inconvenience and ensure the smooth flow of vehicular traffic.
However, the FIR outlines that the guidelines were blatantly ignored during the event, which was scheduled between 12 PM and 3 PM. Police allege that supporters at the venue were incited, prompting massive crowds to dismantle security barricades and spill over onto the prohibited side of the thoroughfare. The resulting chaos led to a complete standstill of traffic on Cathedral Road.
The situation further deteriorated as enthusiastic supporters reportedly engaged in physical scuffles with police personnel deployed to manage the crowd. The police complaint also highlights that the organisers deliberately prolonged the event, continuing the programme well past the time limit mandated by the High Court. Hundreds of TMC workers had converged at the venue to listen to Banerjee’s address, contributing to the swelling crowd.
Kolkata Police have initiated a formal investigation into the incident based on the FIR and are currently preparing the groundwork for further legal action against the organisers.
