New Delhi: The rapid transition to electric vehicles (EVs) across India has fundamentally changed how owners approach car maintenance. While electric cars require significantly less mechanical servicing than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, everyday upkeep—such as a simple car wash at home—demands a highly cautious approach. A minor oversight with water can lead to catastrophic electrical failures, resulting in repair bills running into lakhs of rupees.
Automotive experts and service professionals warn against three critical mistakes that EV owners frequently make when cleaning their vehicles in their driveways.
The foremost rule of washing an electric car is to ensure the vehicle is completely powered down. Owners must verify that the ignition, infotainment systems, lights, and all auxiliary electrical components are switched off before any water touches the exterior. Keeping an EV “live” or active during a wash drastically increases the risk of short-circuiting sensitive internal wiring and expensive onboard computers.
Secondly, the most vulnerable exterior component of an electric vehicle is its charging port. Before initiating a wash, it is imperative to double-check that the charging port cover or flap is tightly and securely sealed. High-pressure water from a spray gun or even a steady stream from a garden hose can easily seep into a loosely closed port. Water ingress at the charging terminal can cause irreversible damage to the high-voltage battery system. Replacing a compromised EV battery pack is notoriously expensive and is rarely covered by warranties if negligence is proven.
Finally, treating an EV’s under-bonnet area like a traditional car’s engine bay is a costly error. Experts strongly advise against spraying water directly under the bonnet. While EVs do not have traditional engines, this area houses crucial high-voltage cables, invertors, and electronic control units that are highly sensitive to moisture. To clean the under-bonnet space, owners should strictly use a lightly damp microfiber cloth to wipe away dust. For removing stubborn dirt or dried leaves, utilizing compressed air pressure is the safest and most recommended method.
By adhering to these simple yet non-negotiable guidelines, electric vehicle owners can maintain their car’s aesthetics without compromising the complex, high-voltage electrical architecture that keeps them moving.
