Colombo: The second Test match between India and Sri Lanka culminated in a hard-fought draw at Colombo, leaving fans and pundits dissecting the thrilling final day. While India appeared poised for an easy victory at the start of Day 5, Sri Lanka’s resilient lower-order batting turned the tide, denying the visitors a clean sweep.
Heading into the final day, the hosts were precariously placed with a narrow 16-run lead and six wickets already down. However, the opening session proved to be a source of immense frustration for the Indian bowling attack. Sri Lankan batters Sonal Dinusha and Keshra Nuwantha stitched together a gritty partnership, completely shutting out the Indian bowlers. Despite trying multiple options, Indian captain Shubman Gill could not find the much-needed breakthrough, allowing the game to drift towards a draw.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gill addressed questions on whether India could have done things differently. “To be honest, nothing. You field for so many overs across three days, we gave it our all, but they played really well,” the captain remarked. “The Sri Lankan batters showed a lot of skill and they had a bit of luck too.”
Despite the draw, Gill highlighted several positive takeaways for the Indian camp. He specifically praised the performances of Devdutt Padikkal, KL Rahul, and the pace battery. The captain reserved special admiration for young spinner Manav Suthar. “I was impressed with everything about him. He is consistent, the way he releases the ball, and how it comes out of his wrist and fingers. It is great to watch him bowl. He will be a very important bowler for us in the future,” Gill stated.
Addressing the debated decision to enforce the follow-on, Gill maintained a practical stance. “These things can only be discussed in hindsight. You take the best decision in the moment, and some things didn’t go our way,” he explained.
Looking ahead, Gill remains optimistic about India’s trajectory in the World Test Championship. “We will now go to New Zealand; that will be an important series for us, followed by a good home season. We hope to make it to the World Test Championship 2027 final,” he affirmed, concluding that despite the result, “Test cricket won today.”
