New Delhi: Marking the culmination of the 80th Independence Day celebrations, President Droupadi Murmu hosted the traditional ‘At Home’ reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday evening. The grand ceremonial gathering witnessed the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside a host of distinguished dignitaries, top political leaders, and prominent citizens from various walks of life.
The elegant event, typically hosted at the sprawling Amrit Udyan lawns of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, began with the soul stirring renditions of Vande Mataram and the National Anthem. Prime Minister Modi was seen warmly greeting leaders and attendees at the historic venue. Joining the President and the Prime Minister were Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Surya Kant, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and former President Ram Nath Kovind, who attended with his wife, Savita Kovind. Former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu and several Union Ministers, including Ashwini Vaishnaw, also graced the occasion.
Adding a touching human element to the high profile gathering, para cricketer Aamir Hussain Lone was among the special invitees, representing the nation’s unsung heroes and sporting achievers.
The ‘At Home’ reception is a time honored tradition that traces its roots back to the British colonial era. Originally started as garden tea parties hosted by the Viceroy for British officers and royals, the practice was seamlessly integrated into India’s democratic traditions post independence. First adapted during the tenure of India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, it has evolved from an exclusive elite gathering into a democratic celebration that honors the nation’s true heroes.
Today, the guest list extends far beyond the top echelons of power. Alongside the Prime Minister, the CJI, armed forces chiefs, and foreign diplomats, the invitation is extended to Padma awardees, freedom fighters, national sports winners, and ordinary citizens driving extraordinary social change.
The serene evening provides a relaxed platform for the nation’s leadership and its citizens to interact, exchange greetings, and celebrate India’s rich cultural tapestry and democratic ethos, making it a fitting conclusion to the Independence Day festivities.
