Dehradun: The rising popularity of GLP 1 drugs has sparked massive curiosity among people looking for effective weight management solutions. Originally designed to treat Type 2 diabetes, these medications are now gaining attention for their significant role in reducing body weight. However, medical experts warn that these prescription drugs must be used with caution and proper understanding.

GLP 1 refers to a natural hormone in the human body that activates after consuming food. Medications that mimic the function of this hormone are known as GLP 1 drugs. They influence specific bodily functions that make a person feel full for longer periods and reduce overall appetite.

Dr Priya, an Endocrinology Consultant at Kailash Hospital in Dehradun, explains the science behind the medication. According to her, GLP 1 drugs effectively control blood sugar levels while slowing down the digestion process. Because food moves gradually from the stomach, individuals experience reduced hunger and fewer cravings. This naturally drops the daily calorie intake, which eventually helps in shedding extra weight.

She highlighted that these drugs were initially created exclusively to manage Type 2 diabetes. When doctors observed significant weight reduction in diabetic patients using this medication, it gradually became a prescribed option for weight management in specific clinical cases.

While the benefits include blood sugar control and better eating habits, the medication carries notable side effects. Beginners might face nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, or a heavy stomach. In severe cases, the drug can cause pancreas inflammation, gallbladder complications, kidney issues due to dehydration, or worsened diabetic eye conditions. Dr Priya advises patients to seek immediate medical help if they experience severe stomach pain or continuous vomiting.

Medical professionals strongly advise against treating GLP 1 drugs as a quick shortcut for weight reduction. Taking the medication without adopting a balanced diet and regular exercise routine will not yield permanent results. Also, individuals might regain the lost weight once they stop the medication. Therefore, it remains strictly a prescription drug that requires complete medical supervision.
