Kolkata: In a sweeping employment and social welfare push, the West Bengal government has announced a massive recruitment drive to fill one lakh vacant posts across various state departments. Presenting the state’s budget for the financial year 2026-27 in the Legislative Assembly on Monday, Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta unveiled the mega employment package, highlighting a landmark 33 percent horizontal reservation for women candidates across all upcoming vacancies.
The large-scale recruitment campaign is structured to address long-pending vacancies in essential public service sectors while simultaneously modernizing the state administration. Under the blueprint finalized by the government, the education department will receive the highest allocation with 50,000 teaching and non-teaching positions designated for schools and educational institutions. Furthermore, 20,000 appointments will be made within the police department to bolster law enforcement, enhance public safety, and strengthen the state security apparatus. The remaining 30,000 vacancies are distributed among various other administrative wings to ensure efficient public service delivery.
To broaden the applicant pool and accommodate candidates whose career timelines were disrupted in recent years, the government has extended the existing five-year relaxation in the upper age limit for another two years. Additionally, the state has introduced a 10 percent quota in applicable positions for former Agniveers returning after completing their service under the central government’s Agnipath scheme.
This multi-sectoral employment push is expected to yield an immediate, transformative impact on the local populace, particularly among the unemployed youth and women job seekers who will directly secure nearly 33,000 government positions. For the common citizen, filling these crucial institutional vacancies stands to vastly improve the quality of classroom instruction in government schools and reduce the response times of local law enforcement agencies.
By linking the employment drive with progressive reservation policies and age-limit concessions, the government aims to combine administrative capability with social equity. While opposition benches have urged the administration to release explicit timelines for the individual departmental notifications, the financial allocation indicates that the initial phases of the recruitment tests will be set in motion over the coming months.
