Chennai: In a major political realignment following the recent assembly elections, Tamil Maanila Congress Moopanar chief GK Vasan announced that his party is officially exiting the National Democratic Alliance. Speaking after a crucial general council meeting of the party in Chennai on Sunday, Vasan clarified that the immediate priority for his organisation is grassroot restructuring rather than maintaining pre-electoral coalitions.

The former Union Minister emphasized that the Tamil Maanila Congress is not part of the NDA block currently and will maintain an independent identity to prepare for the upcoming local body elections. Vasan noted that while political alliances are necessary during major elections, being in a constant coalition often reduces the responsibilities and drive of grassroots party workers. Out of 600 key participants who attended the internal meeting, over 450 functionaries explicitly voiced their opinion that the party needs to function independently to expand its support base across Tamil Nadu.

However, the party chief maintained a highly cooperative posture toward his former alliance partners. He stated that the party has absolutely no disputes or differences of opinion with either the Bharatiya Janata Party or the AIADMK. Vasan highlighted that the Tamil Maanila Congress has always been an exemplary partner in preserving alliance harmony and will continue to share cordial and friendly relations with these parties.

The decision comes at a time when the political landscape of Tamil Nadu is witnessing unexpected shifts that have impacted both the ruling and opposition blocks. The alliance in which the Tamil Maanila Congress participated faced consecutive electoral setbacks over the past few years, slipping behind a newly emerging political force in the state assembly polls. Vasan acknowledged that the party had not achieved the level of growth desired over the past 12 years and underscored that future decisions regarding electoral tie-ups would only be considered when the next election cycle approaches.
