Washington: US President Donald Trump has blamed Iran for the crash of an American military helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz, saying Washington “must respond” to the incident. The statement has added fresh tension to an already volatile West Asia, where the United States, Iran and Israel remain locked in a period of heightened military and diplomatic pressure.
According to reports, a US Army AH 64 Apache helicopter went down near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz while operating in the region. The aircraft was carrying two crew members, both of whom were rescued safely after spending nearly two hours in the water.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, claimed that he had been informed by the military that Iranian forces had brought down the advanced Apache helicopter during an operation near the critical waterway. He said both pilots survived without injury, but added that the United States would have to respond to what he described as an attack.
US military officials, however, have maintained a more cautious position. US Central Command said the helicopter had crashed near the coast of Oman and that the two crew members were recovered safely. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and detailed official information on whether hostile action was involved has not yet been released.
The rescue operation drew attention because an unmanned surface vessel was used to locate and recover the crew. The drone boat reportedly helped identify their position and move them to safety before further evacuation by US forces. The incident is being seen as a significant operational moment for the use of unmanned systems in maritime emergencies.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most sensitive maritime corridors, with a large share of global energy shipments passing through the narrow waterway. Any military incident in the area can quickly trigger concerns over regional security, oil prices and wider conflict.
The latest crash comes amid continuing tension involving Iran, the United States and Israel. While Trump’s remarks have raised the possibility of a sharper American response, the absence of a final investigation report leaves key questions unanswered.
For now, the safe rescue of the crew has prevented casualties, but the political fallout from the incident could deepen uncertainty in West Asia.
