New Delhi: Wired earphones, once seen as a fading gadget in the age of TWS earbuds, appear to be making a quiet comeback. From international celebrities to social media influencers, several public figures have recently been spotted using wired earphones, triggering a fresh debate among Gen Z users over style, convenience and safety.
For many young users, wired earphones are no longer outdated. They are being seen as simple, real and even fashionable. The biggest attraction is convenience. There is no pairing issue, no battery anxiety and no need to charge them before use. One only needs to plug them in and start listening.
The renewed interest has also been driven by practical problems faced by some TWS users. Complaints about connection drops, battery drain, audio lag and discomfort during long usage have become common. Since many wireless earbuds fit deep inside the ear canal, users may also experience irritation, wax build up or discomfort if they are used for long hours without proper cleaning.
The health debate, however, has become the biggest talking point. A section of internet users believes that Bluetooth earbuds release radiation close to the ear and may be harmful. But experts say there is no strong scientific evidence to prove that normal use of certified wireless earbuds is dangerous. The radiation level from Bluetooth devices is considered very low.
Doctors point out that the real risk is not radiation but loud volume. Whether the earphone is wired or wireless, listening at high volume for long periods can damage hearing. This is why volume control and limited usage are more important than the type of device being used.
There are also concerns about poor quality or uncertified audio products. Experts advise users to avoid cheap and unverified gadgets, as safety standards may not be properly followed. Good hygiene is equally important, especially in the case of earbuds that sit inside the ear.
The trend also has a lifestyle angle. Many users are tired of being constantly connected and prefer wired earphones as a small digital break. The return of retro fashion has also helped old school gadgets regain popularity.
In terms of audio quality, wired earphones still have an edge in some areas. Their sound is usually more stable and delay free, which is why gamers, editors and music professionals often prefer wired audio. At the same time, wireless earbuds offer active noise cancellation, portability and smart features.
