Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders have brought fresh life into the IPL 2026 playoff race after defeating Mumbai Indians by four wickets in Match 65 at Eden Gardens on Wednesday night.

The result helped KKR move two places up in the points table, from eighth to sixth. With this victory, Ajinkya Rahane’s side now has 13 points from 13 matches and a positive net run rate of 0.011. The win has kept Kolkata alive in the battle for the fourth playoff spot, while Mumbai Indians remain out of contention after another disappointing evening.

Batting first, Mumbai Indians managed 147 for 8 in 20 overs. KKR chased down the target with seven balls remaining, scoring 148 for 6 in 18.5 overs. The result gave Kolkata two crucial points at a stage where every match can change the shape of the table.

The top three playoff spots have already been sealed. Royal Challengers Bengaluru are leading the table with 18 points from 13 matches, while Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad have 16 points each. GT are placed second and SRH third because of net run rate.

The real suspense now surrounds the fourth spot. Rajasthan Royals are currently in the strongest position with 14 points from 13 games and a net run rate of 0.083. Punjab Kings also have 13 points from 13 matches, but they sit above KKR because of a better net run rate of 0.227.

For KKR, the equation is still challenging but not impossible. They will need to win their final league match against Delhi Capitals and also hope other results go their way. The most important day could be May 24, when Rajasthan Royals face Mumbai Indians and KKR take on Delhi Capitals. If Rajasthan lose and Kolkata win, KKR can move ahead with 15 points.

Punjab Kings will also play a key role in this race. Their final league match against Lucknow Super Giants on May 23 could further complicate the playoff picture. If Punjab win, the fight for the final position will become even tighter.

The defeat has left Mumbai Indians with little more than pride to play for. The five time champions have struggled for consistency this season, and their loss to KKR confirmed how difficult their campaign has been.

For Kolkata, however, the victory has changed the mood. A team that once looked almost out of the race has now forced its way back into the conversation. The margin for error is gone, but the belief has returned.

As IPL 2026 enters its final league stretch, the message for Rajasthan, Punjab and Kolkata is simple. One slip can end the dream. One strong night can open the playoff door.
