New Delhi: Despite England’s heartbreaking semifinal exit from the T20 World Cup 2026 and a dismal Ashes campaign, head coach Brendon McCullum appears set to retain his position, according to recent reports from British media.

The Kiwi tactician expanded his role to include white-ball formats in early 2025, having revolutionised England’s Test cricket with his aggressive ‘Bazball’ approach since taking charge in 2022. However, the team’s fortunes have faltered lately. Under captain Harry Brook, England crashed out in the Champions Trophy’s first round and suffered a 1-4 drubbing in the Ashes Down Under. The latest blow came on Thursday at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where India posted a mammoth 253 and edged out England by seven runs in a thrilling chase.

Following the defeat, McCullum voiced his intent to soldier on. “I want to continue,” he said amid speculation about his future. A report in The Guardian underscores ECB officials’ backing for the 45-year-old, with no signs of an imminent sacking. McCullum is heading back to New Zealand for a breather, but crucial talks are slated soon, potentially sealing his fate before the 2027 World Cup – when his contract expires.

While other nations are reshuffling post-World Cup, England’s faith in McCullum’s vision remains unshaken, betting on a turnaround. Fans, however, are divided, questioning if ‘Bazball’— a term used to describe Brendon McCullum’s aggressive style of play — has lost its fizz in shorter formats.

All eyes are focused on the ECB’s next move as cricket’s powerhouses prepare for future battles.
