New Delhi: US President Donald Trump held a lengthy and “outstanding” phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday, covering a broad spectrum of issues from trade and energy to sensitive geopolitical matters like Taiwan and the Ukraine conflict.

Trump shared details of the discussion on his social media platform, Truth Social, highlighting its positive tone and potential for strengthening bilateral ties over the next three years.

In his post, Trump described the call as “long and detailed,” emphasising economic cooperation. Key points included China’s potential increase in purchases of American energy resources, such as oil and gas, alongside agricultural products.

Notably, Beijing is considering ramping up soybean imports to 20 million tonnes this season and committing to 25 million tonnes next year. Discussions also touched on aviation and manufacturing supply chains, including the delivery of aircraft engines, which Trump labelled as “all very positive.”

The leaders delved into global hotspots, including the Russia-Ukraine war, Iran’s situation, and Taiwan — a longstanding flashpoint in US-China relations.

Trump reiterated his strong personal rapport with Xi, stating, “My relationship with China and my personal relationship with President Xi are very good, and we both understand how important it is to maintain that.”

Adding excitement to the diplomatic exchange, Trump mentioned his planned visit to Beijing in April, expressing enthusiasm and underscoring its significance for US-China diplomacy. While the White House has not issued an official statement, Trump’s account signals ongoing high-level engagement between the world’s two largest economies, amid a history of cooperation mixed with competition in trade, technology, and regional security.

This dialogue comes at a time when US-China relations continue to influence global markets, supply chains, and geopolitical stability.
